Choosing a Childcare Cleaning Provider: What to Look For

Not every cleaning company is set up for early learning environments. A practical checklist for centre directors evaluating a childcare cleaning provider.

Choosing who cleans a childcare centre is a different decision to choosing who cleans an office. The stakes are higher, the standards are more specific, and getting it wrong shows up quickly — in complaints from parents, in audit findings, or in a centre that just doesn't feel right when families walk through the door. Here's what's worth checking before you sign with a provider.

Insurance and Accountability

Ask for proof, not just a claim.: A verbal assurance of "we're insured" isn't the same as sighting a current certificate of currency. A centre should never be exposed to risk because a cleaning provider's cover has lapsed.

Consistency of Staff

Ask whether the same people clean your centre every time.: High staff turnover and rotating crews mean your centre is being cleaned by strangers to the space every visit, with no accumulated familiarity with its layout, its routines or its quirks. A provider who assigns a consistent team to your site tends to notice more and cut fewer corners.

Products Suited to Children

Ask what's actually being used.: Childcare environments have a "high-touch zone" from the floor to about a metre high — toys, chair legs, mats — where products need to be effective against bacteria and viruses but safe for children who crawl and put things in their mouths. This isn't the same product list as a standard office clean.

Documentation You Can Show an Auditor

Ask if cleaning is recorded, not just performed.: Centres are subject to health and safety audits, and being able to produce a documented cleaning record — what was done, when, by whom — is worth far more in that moment than a verbal assurance that "we clean thoroughly."

Local Responsiveness

Ask how quickly they can respond to something urgent.: A spill, an incident, or an unplanned deep clean before a centre re-opens can't wait a week for a provider based on the other side of the city.

Conclusion

A childcare cleaning provider should be able to answer all five of these without hesitation. If they can't, that's worth noticing before a contract is signed, not after. We've built our own approach around exactly these points over 20 years of servicing centres across Ku-ring-gai and the Upper North Shore.
